Hot water accounts for around one third of all household energy bills, and that’s a big chunk of your money. But we know a few simple tricks to stop your dollars from flowing down the drain.
COOL CLOTHES: Warm laundry cycles use 10 times
more energy than cold ones, so include at least a few
cold washes in your weekly routine.
GREEN DISHES: Use the ‘Eco/Energy Saver’program
on your dishwasher: it’ll take a little longer but you’ll
use around 20% less energy each time.
SHUN THE TUB: An average bath uses 150+ litres
of water. Swap just a few of your baths for showers – and keep those showers shorter!
DITCH THE DRIPS: Dripping hot taps can waste up to 7 litres of water a day, but a new washer only costs a couple of dollars and should last a few years.
NO RUNNING: If you’re shaving or doing a few dishes by hand, don’t leave the hot tap
running – fill the sink instead.
PIPING HOT: If you have a gas hot water cylinder, make sure that it’s well insulated, and the same goes for your hot water pipes.
CHECK YOUR STATS: Set the thermostat on your hot water cylinder to 60oC (leaving it just 10°C higher can add significant dollars to your annual bill).
CHANGE IT UP: Make a real difference with a long-term solution that’s great for your wallet, the environment and the value of your home...
